CU Forward Day is a statewide day of Minnesota’s credit unions spreading kindness in the communities they serve. The day is held annually on Columbus Day, a federal holiday on the second Monday of October.
Credit unions are devoted to the philosophy of “People Helping People” which is exhibited by their cooperative structures, support of financial education, and active engagement within their communities.
This year, due to COVID-19, looked a little different. Since the entire staff wasn’t able to physically be together to volunteer, all WFCU employees were given $50 to Pay It Forward in our community. A variety of actions were taken from the 13 staff members of WFCU, kindness was spread through gift cards and item donations. View the CU Forward Day video here.
In 2019, WFCU employees will volunteer roughly 20 hours total providing goodie bags to the residents of the John Carroll and Nan McKay buildings. And volunteering at the West St. Paul YMCA to help them prepare for their move into their temporary location and for the Halloween Party on October 18. Additionally, a cash donation to a local non-profit, selected by the employees, will be donated by WFCU following the statewide kindness day.
“Being a source of kindness in our communities is one of the simplest ways we can give back,” said Mary Matheson, President and CEO of Wakota Federal Credit Union. “Joining other credit unions in an effort to spread kindness across our state showcases the true power of collaboration.”
